Denmark zoo seeks unwanted pets to feed their zoo animals
Aalborg, Denmark – Aalborg Zoo in Denmark is inviting the public to donate unwanted small pets—including chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs—to be used as food for its carnivorous animals. The zoo assures donors that all animals will be humanely euthanized before being fed to its lions, tigers, and other large predators. According to zoo officials, this approach offers a more natural diet for the zoo’s animals and provides a solution for people unable to care for their pets any longer.
The initiative has sparked considerable debate. Some people find the idea disturbing and hard to believe, while others consider it a practical and ethical solution. Despite the controversy, Aalborg Zoo stands by its decision, emphasizing the benefits for both the animals and the environment.
The Times, a UK-based news organization, shared the story of the Anderson family from Jutland. Helen Anderson’s daughter Stephanie owned a 20-year-old pony named Paprika, who began suffering and lost her quality of life after a seizure. Their veterinarian advised letting Paprika die naturally in a field, but the family couldn’t bear the thought of seeing her hauled away with other deceased animals. Instead, they brought Paprika to Jyllands Park Zoo, which runs a similar pet donation program.

Anderson shared how grateful she was of the service, “The idea that she could be of benefit made sense. We would do it again. We appreciate the idea of the cycle of life, and that a pony can help to create life for other animals.”
